Florida State Golf Set For Seminole Intercollegiate

March 13, 2014

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – With a team title and a second place finish already this season, the No. 12 Florida State men’s golf team returns home to host the Seminole Intercollegiate at the Southwood Golf Club. The team tees off at 10:00 a.m. from hole one Friday. The tournament, which runs through Sunday, is free admission for fans to enjoy.

“Playing at home is great for two reasons, it gives your players an opportunity to play in front of their fans instead of other school’s fans and it’s also great for Tallahassee,” said head coach Trey Jones. “The community here at Southwood is amazing and the people here provide a great atmosphere.”

Florida State has swept both the team and individual title at the home event the past two years and look to do the same this weekend.

“We’re very confident,” said sophomore Hank Lebioda. “We’re a young team but we’re growing as a team and individually. All of us are very comfortable with where we are right now and Coach Jones and Coach (Robert) Duck have seen that. We’re all expecting a good week out here. We look forward to playing in our home event. This is the best chance for everyone to win the individual title. We’re all pumped, excited and ready to go.”

The team plays the same line-up from their last tournament, the USF Invitational, where they broke the school record for the lowest team score. Two sophomores, Lebioda and Rowin Caron, along with three freshmen, Jack Maguire, Cristobal Del Solar and Harry Ellis, are representing the Garnet and Gold.

“We’re going to play three freshmen and two sophomores so there isn’t a lot of experience,” continued Jones. “The only thing we can do is execute the shot in front of us, we can build on what we did at USF, but once we get here on Friday, there are a lot of teams that can take it to us if we’re not ready to play. This is a game of confidence and it just kind of breeds on itself. Hopefully the process is working, they are practicing a little bit harder and smarter and that breeds the confidence. It’s good to see us develop as the year goes on.”

Three Seminoles will be playing as individuals including senior Joaquin Lolas, sophomore Collin Engelhardt and freshmen Josh Lee. The individuals tee off from hole 10 beginning at 9:53 a.m.

Joining Florida State in the 13-team field is No. 29 South Florida, No. 34 Mercer, North Carolina, Coastal Carolina, George Washington, Illinois State, James Madison, Mississippi State, Penn State, Troy, Western Kentucky and Winthrop.
