Florida State Hosts Intrasquad Garnet and Gold Match Saturday

April 25, 2014

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The fourth-ranked Florida State sand volleyball team will host an intrasquad Garnet and Gold exhibition match at 12 p.m. on Saturday at the FSU Sand Volleyball Complex.

Earlier this week, the Seminoles (16-1) captured the No. 3 seed for the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships from May 2-4 in Gulf Shores, Ala.

Saturday’s intrasquad competition will serve as a final tune-up for FSU as it seeks its first national championship following back-to-back semifinals appearances at Nationals in 2012 and 2013.

“We are undefeated in the Southeast for the third straight year so our intrasquad matches are as tough as almost anything we play all year,” head coach Danalee Corso said. “We purposely place this match the week before Nationals so we can have strong competition heading into the most important event of the year. We are looking forward to seeing how we peak at this event.”

Since being edged by No. 1-ranked Southern California, 3-2, in Los Angeles on March 14, the Seminoles have won 11 consecutive duals, dropping just two sets along the way.

FSU is led by a pair of All-Americans at the No. 1 position in senior Aurora Davis and junior Jace Pardon. The pair is a near perfect 36-1 this season with its only loss coming to USC’s top pair of Kirby Burnham and Sara Hughes – a tandem they also beat this year. Davis and Pardon have not dropped a set in over a month.

The Seminoles’ No. 2 pair of junior Stephanie Pellitteri and sophomore Kristina Pellitteri hold a 22-4 mark this season, while junior Melanie Pavels and sophomore Julie Brown (22-10) and senior Fatma Yildirim and Sarah Wickstrom (19-3) round out Florida State’s top four with fantastic records.

A pair of young teams have also found success at the back end of the lineup for the Seminoles as sophomore Annie Montgomery and Julia Thompson are 14-7 this season, while freshmen Sierra Sanchez and Hailey Luke are 12-2.
