April 16, 2004

Junior Alan Beers is in a tie for 14th place and the Seminole men’s golf team is in a tie for seventh place after the first round of the 51st annual Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship at Old North State Club. Beers is one of 19 players in the event who finished the first round at even par or better with 13 finishing under par.

North Carolina, ranked 31st in the GolfWeek/Sagarin Power Rankings, leads the team standings after posting a seven-under par team total of 281. Martin Ureta and Dustin Brey, both tied for third with three-under par scores of 69, are the Tar Heels’ leaders. Bill Haas of Wake Forest, the No. 1 ranked golfer in the nation, leads the individual standings with a five-under par 67.

Beers (Warner Robins, Ga.) scored his best round of the spring season as he played 14 of the 18 rounds in the first round at par or better and finished with an even-par 72. He finished both the front and back nine at even par. Beers has now carded three consecutive rounds of 72 or better dating to last weekend’s Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate and has now shot five rounds (of 13 total) at par or better this spring.

Freshman Bradley Ruch (Lexington, Ken.) and junior Mark Sestilio (Punta Gorda, Fla.) are tied for 24th in the individual standings after carding identical scores of 74. It marked the team leading 14th time this season that Ruch had carded a single-round score of 75 or better. Sestilio finished the round with three birdies.

Junior Rusty Mosley (Vidalia, Ga.) is tied for 31st place as he finished with a three-over par score of 75. He played the back nine at even par after finishing the front nine at three-over par. Except for a double bogey on the sixth hole, Mosley played one-over par golf for 17 of the 18 holes during the round.

Junior Matt Adcock (Apopka, Fla.) finished the round with four-over par score of 76. He played well over the final nine holes with a one-over par total of 37.

The Seminoles will play in the second round of the event beginning Saturday at 8:30 in an attempt to earn their first top five finish in this event since the 1997 season.
