Florida State Looks Sharp in Fall Exhibition

Nov. 9, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State sand volleyball team hosted Georgia State and South Carolina for their annual fall exhibition event on Saturday at the FSU Sand Volleyball Complex.

The Seminoles only lost five sets all day while winning 43 sets in a pool style of play where each match was decided by two sets to 21 points. Georgia State came in second with 23 sets won, and South Carolina, in their first-ever sand volleyball competition, won four sets on the day.

“I think today went great,” head coach Danalee Corso said. “We were 43-5 and we just finished a really heavy cycle of fitness so we weren’t expected to play our best here in the fall. But considering that, our young players really stepped up and we learned how to play tired. That was the biggest thing, learning how to play through obstacles and I think they did a great job doing that.”

The top two teams for Florida State set the tone, and the rest of the squad followed. The duo of Jace Pardon and Stephanie Pellitteri, and the duo of Julie Brown and Melanie Pavels finished the day unbeaten winning eight sets each.

“We’ve been working really hard this semester and I think it was beginning to show today,” Jace Pardon said. “All throughout from the top to the bottom, everyone was working hard and coming together.”

Pardon is coming off a sophomore season where she earned All-America honors, and appears to have improved her game in the off-season. She paired up with Sarah Wickstrom last year, but today she was paired with Stephanie Pellitteri.

“I love playing with Steph [Pellitteri],” Pardon said. “She is a great defender and she was everywhere today.”

The Seminoles finished off the day by winning 22 consecutive sets as a team. The combination of gaining experience with new partners, and stamina played well for the `Noles. Florida State has been on a strict conditioning and fitness schedule this off-season, and that might have given them an advantage over the opposition as the day dragged on.
“I think it was a little bit of both,” Pardon said. “We were definitely gelling with our partners. We got better playing together as the day went along, but we also have been working really hard in our conditioning and training. I think we are able to, and know how to play while we are so tired.”

Florida State brought in two freshmen into the rotation for Saturday’s exhibition match and they didn’t shy away from the competition. Freshman Sierra Sanchez went 7-1 with her partner sophomore Annie Montgomery. The other newcomer, Julia Thompson, finished the day 6-2 with her partner sophomore Blyss Harkness. The highly recruited prospects are fighting for a spot in the starting rotation in the spring.

The Florida State sand volleyball team will continue to train and practice for the spring season. You can catch the Seminoles in action next on Feb. 1 for an intersquad match at the Seminole Sand Volleyball Complex.
