The Florida State men’s tennis team traveled to Tuscaloosa, Ala. Sunday, February 16th, to take on the University of Alabama. The Seminoles were defeated by the 14th-ranked Crimson Tide by a score of 4-3. With the loss, the Tribe falls to 4-3 on the season.
Florida State jumped on top early, earning the first point of the match in doubles action. Juniors Alex Herrera and Romain Jurd, playing at the No. 1 doubles position, defeated Stephen Mitchell and Geoff Hiscox, ranked eighth nationally, by a score of 9-8. At the No. 2 position, Mat Cloer and Rodrigo Laub knocked off Alabama’s William Boyles and Chris Gostek, 9-8. Florida State’s Jeff Groslimond and Chris Westerhoff defeated Maxim Belski and Bradley Friedman in No. 3 doubles by a score of 8-5.
The Seminoles were not as fortunate in singles play, as they fell in four of six matches. Florida State’s Jurd knocked off Mitchell of Alabama in No. 2 singles by scores of 6-0, 7-6. Senior Laub earned the second Seminole victory in singles action, as he defeated Michael Ray Pallares, 6-2, 7-6. In No. 3 singles, Herrera fell to Gostek in three sets by scores of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Groslimond took Alabama’s Christian Brodersen to three sets, but fell 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. Cloer, playing at the No. 1 position, was defeated by 39th-ranked Belski of Alabama by scores of 6-4, 6-4. In No. 4 singles, Chip Webb fell to Hiscox, 7-5, 7-6.
The Seminoles will return to action Wednesday, February 16th, when they host SMU. The match will be held at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center and will begin at 5:00 pm.
