Florida State Prepares For In-State Rival This Weekend

Feb. 25, 2009

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Riding the wave of success, the No. 24 Florida State women’s tennis team will look to defeat rival, No. 12 Florida, for the first time in program history Saturday, February 28. The Seminoles will host the Gators at 1 p.m. at the Scott Tennis Speicher Center in hopes of knocking off Florida as they own the all-time series record against the Seminoles with 32 wins.

“Anytime you play your in-state rival, it’s very easy to get ready for the battle,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “Our team is riding on a nice wave of momentum from our win over LSU, and we plan to carry that into this weekend.”

The Seminoles five-match winning streak will be tested this weekend as Florida enters the competition with three ranked singles’ players and one doubles threat. Florida State will utilize their lone freshman, No. 48 Noemie Scharle (Colmar-berg, Luxembourg), and sophomore’s No. 23 Katie Rybakova (Coral Springs, Fla.) and No. 81 Federica Suess (Ludwigshafen, Germany) to lead the Garnet and Gold to their first ever triumph over the Gators.

In last year’s match up in Gainesville, Florida State was unable to pull through despite Lauren Macfarlane’s (Ogden, Utah) victory over No. 58 Megan Alexander 6-3, 6-1. Macfarlane gave the Seminoles their only match point of the night. Suess also battled on her court as she took her opponent to three sets after wining the first with 7-5.

“This is the last match for us before we head into our challenging ACC schedule,” Hyde said. “There is no doubt this will be a battle on both sides of the net, however, these are the moments you play collegiate tennis for. There has not been a women’s tennis team that has defeated the Gators. My girls are ready to make program history and conquer Florida.”

Come cheer on the Seminoles as the women’s team will be baking treats and accepting donations on behalf of the Relay for Life to support breast cancer awareness. www.seminoles.com
