Florida Game Notes

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Recipients of a first-place vote in this week’s ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, the No. 7/8 Florida State Seminoles (38-4) are preparing for another top-10 matchup with No. 8/6 Florida (34-8) that will be held on JoAnne Graf Field at 6:00 p.m. on April 9. The Seminoles have won 17 games in a row and defeated the Gators 3-2 in eight innings in Gainesville on April 2.

“The feeling you get from playing at home in a rivalry game is huge,” said head coach Lonni Alameda. “We love playing the competitive schedule that we have had and Florida is just another great competitor that brings a lot of different things to the park from pitching to hitting to the speed that they have.”

Maddie O’Brien earned ACC Player of the Week honors on April 7 after batting .571 (8-for-14) with two doubles, three home runs, five walks, five RBI and six runs scored. She also posted a slugging percentage of 1.357 and an on-base percentage of .684.

O’Brien leads the NCAA with 16 home runs, 63 RBI and a .959 slugging percentage. She is also in the top-20 nationally in on-base percentage (.543 – 15th) and batting average (.451 – 18th).

Lacey Waldrop joined O’Brien with a conference honor of her own. Waldrop won the ACC Pitcher of the Week for the fifth consecutive week, seventh time this season and 12th time in her career. Her seven conference honors is a record for a single season. The Chester, Va., native leads the NCAA with 25 victories and her 0.70 ERA is the second-lowest mark in the country.

Florida State’s crew of freshman made a big impact in the recent weekend series with Maryland. The entire squad of first year players batted .500 (6-for-12) with six walks, four RBI and eight runs scored. Redshirt freshman Alex Powers made her first career start against the Terrapins on April 6 and true freshman Corey Hendrickson crushed her first career home run in the second game of the doubleheader on April 5.

The Florida State/Florida game will be broadcast on ESPN3 with Tom Block and Robin Ahrberg on the call. Live stats will be available on GameTracker.
