Florida State Soccer Opens Pre-Season With 2-1 Win Over No. 6 Georgia

Aug. 18, 2000

The Florida State Seminoles traveled to the University of Georgia Friday to open their pre-season versus the Southeast region’s No. 6 squad. Senior April Murphy scored two goals and the Noles defense shutout the Bulldogs for almost 70 minutes before giving up their only score of the game. The teams scrimmaged for three 30 minutes periods in front of 1,324 Bulldog fans.

“The biggest thing is that this is just a starting point,” said head coach Patrick Baker. “There is still a lot of work to be done but we just need to keep building step-by-step.”

The Noles almost recorded a shutout Friday night before a miscommunication in the back allowed Georgia to score their lone goal. “They took advantage of a miscue in our defense,” said Baker about the Bulldogs’ goal. “Our defense did a great job of limiting them all game and they really had very few chances.”

Murphy, whose two goals versus Georgia were unassisted, is fifth on the FSU all-time list for goals scored (13) and was the Seminole’s second-leading goal scorer last season (6). “April scored two big goals for us,'” said Baker about Murphy’s performance Friday night.

The Seminoles spent most of their last Friday before school starts on a bus bound for Athens but the 2-1 victory over the University of Georgia should give FSU a big lift as they continue to prepare for their season-opener versus the University of Florida, the nation’s seventh-ranked team.

“We got a big win versus a Georgia team that is ranked in the top 10 in the Southeast,” said Baker. “It’s quite an accomplishment considering how tough it was to drive to Georgia and then play a match all in one day.”

The Seminoles will meet the press Tuesday, August 22 at media day, which runs from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The Noles open their season Friday, August 25 against the University of Florida.
