Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team will begin its dual-match season this Saturday, January 24, as the Seminoles host the Jacksonville Dolphins at 1 p.m. The Scott Speicher Tennis Center will welcome the Dolphins for the ninth year and third consecutive under head coach Jennifer Hyde.
“We are really looking forward to the home opener,” said Hyde. “We worked out some rust at our first competition in Chicago, Ill., and are a bit more court-savvy now going into our first dual-match competition.”
The No. 20 ranked Seminoles will be the sole team coming into the weekend with ranked players as sophomores Katie Rybakova (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Federica Suess (Ludwigshafen, Germany) are ranked at No. 35 and 53, respectively.
“We will continue to work on our doubles’ combinations and what works,” said Hyde.”We have plenty of people that can step up and get the job done this weekend.”
The Seminoles look to extend their winning streak against Jacksonville to nine, as they defeated the Dolphins last year, 7-0. At the 2008 match-up, Florida State conquered Jacksonville with a doubles’ point from senior Ania Rynarzewska (Inowroclaw, Poland) and former Seminole Tapiwa Marobela. To finish off the victory, junior Jessica Sucupira (Whitehouse, Texas) added the third singles’ win against her opponent, 6-1, 6-1.
“Anyone on our team has the opportunity to lead every time they step on the court,” added Hyde. “It’s a matter of keeping things simple; doing the fundamentals that we have been working on and competing really hard. Every time we compete, we have to get better to prepare us for our ACC meets starting in March.”
