Tallahassee- Florida State women’s tennis team will travel to Athens, Ga., this weekend to compete in the 2008 Wilson/ITA Southern Regional Championships. Competition will be held at the University of Georgia and will go from Friday, October 24 through Monday, October 27. Twenty one different schools will hit the courts this weekend, including 14 players ranked in the ITA top 125 singles list and four doubles teams ranked in the ITA top 50.
Matches will consist of an “A” and “B” flight that include a 64 player singles draw and 32-team doubles bracket. There will also be a consolation round for the singles draw only. The “A” flight finalist from singles and doubles will battle in the ITA National Indoor Championships next month along with winners and finalist from all regions and at-large selections.
‘We all are very excited to be heading to Athens for this year’s regional tournament,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “This tournament gives the girls an opportunity to qualify for the National Indoor Singles/Doubles Championships, so there is a lot to be gained and a lot at stake this weekend. We are fresh mentally and physically and I’m eager for that first round to begin on Friday.”
Five players will represent the Seminoles in singles while two teams will compete in the doubles matches. Junior Jessica Sucupira (Wente) and sophomore Bonny Davidson will be the first doubles team and sophomore Federica Suess and junior No. 53 Lauren Macfarlane will compose the second. No. 24 Katie Rybakova will also compete but is only playing singles.
“We’ve been practicing hard during these last few weeks and I know the team is itching to compete, which is the reward for all their hard work,” said Hyde.
