Florida State Volleyball Conducts First 2016 Practice

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State volleyball team conducted its first official practice of the 2016 season on Tuesday at Tully Gymnasium.

The Seminoles return eight players, including seniors Mara Green, Katie Horton, Melanie Keil and captain Hailey Luke, from the 2015 squad that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Florida State welcomes four newcomers—including freshmen Bozena Culo, Stasa Miljevic and Madison Sullivan—and transfer Natasha Calkins, who joins the program after two years at Santa Clara.

“It’s good to get back on the court training,” said head coach Chris Poole. “Four months is a long time to not be on the court as a team. We have a lot of work to do in a short amount of time.”

On Aug. 6, the Noles were picked to finish second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in a vote of the league’s 15 head coaches. On that same day it was announced that FSU’s outside hitters Horton and Milica Kubura were named to the Preseason All-ACC team.

“We need to be more disciplined with how we moved on the court and that is the big focus for us,” added Poole of the first practice. “We have a lot of potential, but didn’t have any one person really stand out today. I feel like everyone was just trying to get into a groove.”

Florida State is slated to face five teams that reached the 2015 NCAA Tournament including Texas A&M (Sept. 1), Florida (Sept. 14), Miami (Sept. 23 / Oct. 19), Louisville (Sept. 25 / Oct. 28) and North Carolina (Oct. 7 / Nov. 6). The Seminoles open the season on Saturday, August 27 when they head to UCF for a 1 p.m. match with the Knights.

FSU will make its home debut on Sept. 8 when it squares off against Baylor as part of the Home2 Suites by Hilton-Tallahassee Seminole Tournament.
