The Lady Seminoles suffered its first loss of the season to SEC-foe South Carolina Friday night in the FSU Classic. The Gamecocks outhit FSU .432 to .188 and outblocked the Noles 8-3. Freshman Erica Bunch led FSU with 13 kills.

19 kills from junior Jennifer Werrick helped lead FSU to a 3-game sweep of FIU in Saturday’s afternoon match. Freshmen Alex Sevillano, Erica Bunch, and Dawn Hough totaled 7 service aces.

Indiana claimed the FSU Classic title with a 3-0 victory over the Lady Seminoles in Saturday’s nightcap. Florida State hit a dismal .036 in the defeat. Erica Bunch led FSU with 8 kills.

Sophomore middle hitter Norisha Campbell rejoined the Lady Seminoles Tuesday after completing a stint with the USA Junior National Team at the FIVB Women’s World Championships in Saskatoon, Canada. During last weekend’s playoff action, Campbell led the team with 11 kills and four blocks in their match against the Czech Republic. The USA team finished 8th overall.
Close to Home
For seniors Courtney Dipert and Aisha Thornton, this weekend’s matches at Northern Illinois in DeKalb, Illinois will be very close to home. Dipert hails from Lisle, IL, and Thornton is from Country Club Hills, IL, both in the Chicago area and less than an hour east of NIU.
Seven New Faces
The Lady Seminoles have quite a few new names on their 1999 roster. Seven new players will line up alongside FSU’s seven returning letterwinners. All of the Lady Seminoles new players are members of the freshmen class.
Nearly half (10 of 21) of Florida State’s opponents this season received votes in the USA Today / AVCA Coaches Preseason Poll released August 12th. FSU faces a pair of Top 12 teams during September, both in Tallahassee. #12 UC Santa Barbara visits on the 15th and #8 Florida comes to town on the 28th. Five ACC schools received votes (FSU, GT, UNC, UVa, Clem.). FSU’s schedule also boasts 14 matches against 10 1998 NCAA Tournament teams.
