TALLAHASSEE, FL.–The No. 4 seeded Florida State Seminoles downed the No. 5 seeded Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 4-2 in the first quarterfinal match of the 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Championship at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Fla. FSU improves its record to 14-9 with the win while the Yellow Jackets drop to 11-11 overall.
Marina Raic and Natalie Carratala’ led the way for FSU in doubles with an 8-4 win over Mason Miller and Fallon Koon at the No. 3 position. Florida State’s No. 1 tandem of Jessica Balbuena and Samantha Schoeffel clinched the crucial doubles point as they defeated Mysti Morris and Bobbi Guthrie, 8-5.
In singles action, Florida State got a straight set win from Samantha Schoeffel at No. 2, moving the Seminoles ahead 2-0. Georgia Tech would even the score with victories at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, but FSU would once again take the lead with a win from Alida Gallovits at the No. 1 position.
Needing one more singles match to go their way, FSU put their faith in Nanette Duxin at No. 4 and Christina Denny at No. 5. Both players would battle their opponents over three tough sets, with Duxin clinching the overall match for the Noles with a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 victory over Bobbi Guthrie.
The Seminoles will face the top-seeded Duke Blue Devils on Saturday, April 21 at 10:00 a.m.
