The Florida State women’s tennis team extended its winning streak to a season high three by defeating Marquette 6-1. The win brings the Seminoles record to 6-5 and drops the Golden Eagles to 4-8.
Junior Jessica Balbuena and freshman Samantha Schoeffel led the way to victory for FSU. The tandem first defeated Marquette’s Laura Garcia and Gen Charron in doubles play to start the team off. Then both respectively overwhelmed their opponents in straight sets to bring the score to 3-0. Balbuena and Schoeffel’s doubles match win extended their doubles winning streak to five matches.
Laura Garcia helped the Golden Eagles avoid the sweep with an upset victory over FSU’s Alida Gallovits at the No. 1 singles position. Marquette seemed poised to take a second point over FSU but Nanette Duxin overcame being down 5-3 in the third set to win 7-5 and take the point.
Lise Gregory moved into a tie for second place for all-time wins at Florida State with the win against Marquette. It was her 68th victory.
Next up for the Seminoles is a road trip to California where they are scheduled to play Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, and San Diego State. Florida State will be back in action at home on Sunday March 18th at 10 a.m. when they take on Virginia in the first ACC match of the season.
