Florida State’s Gator Bowl Press Conference

Dec. 31, 2004

Jacksonville, Fla. — Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden, senior defensive tackle Travis Johnson, senior quarterback Chris Rix, and junior tailback Leon Washington attended the Gator Bowl press conference Friday at Alltel Stadium. Coach Bowden and the three players then met the team for the Gator Bowl luncheon, which was held outside Alltel Stadium.

DT Travis Johnson

(on the importance of the game)

“This is a big game for these two teams. We get fired up just as we would for any game we play. It’s no different than any other game. We just want to go out there and play our best.”

(on West Virginia’s offense)

“I think the key will be stopping their running game and containing their quarterback. There’s not many times you play a quarterback who runs a 4.3 40. That’s like Michael Vick type stuff. We just have to stay in our gaps and play our defense.”

QB Chris Rix

(on his last game in the Gator Bowl)

“I’m excited about the opportunity. It feels like an eternity since we played our last game. The Gator Bowl has treated us great all week and we’ve had a great time. We hope it ends with a great game on Saturday. I’m very excited about it.”

RB Leon Washington

(on playing in front of family and friends in Jacksonville)

“All week long I’ve been going out and seeing my family. Everybody seems to be my friend or my cousin. I’ve been getting tickets for my family and friends. I think officially I had to come up with 51 tickets. It will be like high school where everyone will come out and hopefully we’ll have a lot of fun in this game.”

(on being ready to play)

“I think guys have been more focused this week especially on offense. We are looking to have a good performance. We practiced extremely well this week. Hopefully we’ll take what we did at practice onto the field. I think if we are able to run the ball we’ll be successful. When Lorenzo (Booker) and I have run well, we’ve won games this year.”
