March 3, 2007
Athens, Ga. –
It was a new day for Freshman Terry Horner (Orlando, Fla.), but it produced the same result. Horner won the three-meter diving competition just as he did on the one-meter board one day earlier at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships held in Athens, Ga.
Horner earned his third school record of the season and third of the meet with a score of 748.50. This will be the second consecutive season that a Florida State diver has competed in two events at NCAA Championships. The 2007 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships span March 15-17 and will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
On the one-meter board, the women’s team was led by freshman Katie Sirounis (Inner Harbor Beach, Fla.) who placed 12th. Sirounis was only one and four tenths of a point shy of earning her first trip to nationals. She scored 494.40 points in the eleven dive competition. Freshman Aleia Monden (Honolulu, Hawaii) placed 23rd with a score of 230.45 which failed to make the finals.
Also competing off the three-meter board was sophomore Scott Derner (Grapevine, Texas) who finished in tenth place. Derner scored 673.70 and was a mere three and one-tenth points shy of capturing eighth place and advancing to nationals. Junior Alex Tilbrook (Largo, Fla.) claimed 19th place, only one position out of making the finals. Tilbrook posted a score of 289.00. Freshman Dan Frebel (Fort Wayne, Ind.) finished in 22nd place with a score of 284.00.
The Zone B Championships conclude on Sunday March 4, 2007. The final event is the platform diving which begins at 10:00 with the men’s competition, followed at 1:00 by the women’s competition. The top eight male divers and top eleven female divers advance from each zone to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
