Florida State’s Weinke And Hope Earn Academic Honor

Heisman Trophy candidate Chris Weinke and defensive back Chris Hope have been named to the Verizon CoSIDA Academic All-District III football team it was announced Thursday. To be eligible for selection a player must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 in the classroom and be a starter or key reserve on the field. Both Weinke and Hope are now eligible for the national Verizon All-America team that will be announced in early December.

Weinke, a senior from St. Paul, Minn., became Florida State’s all-time leading passer this season and has thrown for 9,162 yards entering Saturday’s game against Wake Forest. His 9,162 career passing yards ranks third in Atlantic Coast Conference history behind only Ben Bennett of Duke (9,614 career yards) and Jamie Barnette of NC State (9,461 yards). In addition, he has thrown for a school-record 71 career touchdowns and has thrown for 300 or more yards in 11 career games.

Weinke will earn his bachelor’s degree in sports administration in December.

Hope is Florida State’s fifth leading tackler with a career-high 67 total tackles. He recorded a career-high 11 tackles against Miami and added 10 tackles against both North Carolina and Louisville this season. Hope is third on the team with seven pass break-ups and is among the team leaders with four tackles for negative yardage. The All-District selection is the second consecutive season Hope has earned the honor.

Hope, a junior from Rock Hill, S.C., is majoring in communications.
