March 7, 2002

The Florida State indoor track and field team will send four athletes to Fayetteville, Ark. to compete at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championship. The national meet will run from Thursday, March 7, to Saturday, March 9.

Senior Shawn Brown (Tampa, Fla.) will represent the men’s team as he attempts to repeat his All-America performance of 2001 in the high jump. Brown has the seventh-best mark in the nation entering the meet at 7-02.5, which is the same height he cleared last season to place fourth at the NCAA meet. Brown owns the school indoor-record at 7-03.75.

Freshman standout Lacy Janson (Sarasota, Fla.) is the only Seminole who automatically qualified for the meet. Her mark of 13-07.25 in the pole vault ranks her eighth in the nation and is the Atlantic Coast Conference record. Entering the NCAA meet, Janson has earned ACC Performer of the Week honors twice and won the ACC title in the pole vault.

Junior Kim Jones (Greensboro, N.C.) will compete in the 60-meter hurdles and the long jump, both events that she won ACC titles in this year. Jones’ mark of 20-10 at the ACC meet places her sixth in the nation heading into the meet, while her time of 8.28 is 12th-best.

Rounding out the field for the Tribe is senior high jumper Stacey Taylor (Pittsburgh, Penn). Taylor cleared 1.80-meters, 17th-highest mark in the nation, last weekend at the Virginia Tech Last Chance meet to provisionally qualify.

A total of 270 participants will compete at the championships. Student-athletes qualified for the championships by reaching automatic and provisional standards established for each event.
