FSU Head Coach Mike Martin

Opening Statement

“We are obviously excited to be in the position that we are in but we know that this tournament is a long way from being over.  There are two very good baseball teams who will be playing tomorrow that are capable of winning this thing also.  We just know that we’ve got a lot of work to do.”

“One thing I want to say is the guy to my right (Sean Gilmartin) has been in this program for three years and he just pitched four innings that were totally uncharacteristic of him.  And yet he goes out in the fifth, sixth and seventh – what was it 95 degrees – and just fights to get his team in the dugout, throws up three zeroes, and our young men did a great job of scoring runs.  That to me shows what kind of guy I have had the pleasure of coaching.  Because there was no concern about himself on the bench.  It was all about the team.  A lot of times I have seen guys go over and sulk because their performance wasn’t what it has been for the last four months.  That makes me proud to be associated with guys like that because that separates the good ones from the great ones.”

“Raffy (Rafael Lopez) had another great game behind the plate with a big hit to left to drive in two; Rammer (James Ramsey) – another tremendous game driving in two bring runs with a base hit to central.  It was a tremendous performance by (Brian) Busch and (Daniel) Bennett.  It’s like we have said all year – it’s a 27 man win.”

(On battling through the night)

“The first four innings obviously weren’t my standard of what I want.  I didn’t really have my best stuff going.  I didn’t really have a great change-up tonight that I normally have. They hit my mistakes.   Credit Alabama for doing that doing a good job there.  The last three or four innings that I threw basically my thought process was to keep them right there.  Coach Shouope and 11 (head coach Mike Martin) watched (an Alabama) game the other day and they figured out they didn’t feel real comfortable swinging at the pitch inside.  That really helped.

Alabama Head Coach Mitch Gaspard

Opening Statement

“Have to tip our hats to Florida State, I thought they played extremely well tonight. I thought our group competed really hard. We had really good energy particularly in the front half of the game and offensively we were really good. I thought we were on the barrel for most of the night against a tremendous left hander in (Sean) Gilmartin. They had a good offensive approach, I thought it was a game where both teams competed really well all night and they were able to have the big inning in the sixth and we had a tough time recovering from that.”

On getting five runs but not being able to get the win

“That’s really been the formula for us, about five runs usually does the trick. We had a different way of getting them tonight, found more barrels tonight but got them in a hurry. I thought the key was Gilmartin when he started pitching on the inner half of the plate. Our approach was to stay back through the middle the other way and when he changed it up it kind of shut us down for a little.”

Alabama Designated Hitter Josh Rosecrans

Hitting off of FASU All-American Sean Gilmartin

“We kept talking about staying middle away the whole time. We wanted to stay opposite field for most of the time and we were able to do that early on in the game.”

On the effect of the loss on the team

“I don’t think it completely sucked the wind out of us. Our guys competed big time tonight. I never saw us get too down or discouraged we pretty much stayed with it for most of the game. Gilmartin settled in and made some pitches and did a good job.”

Alabama Starting Pitcher Adam Morgan

On Florida State’s lineup

“They have a tremendous lineup, we just made some mistakes and fell behind. They were very disciplined at the plate and the pitches I gave them they took advantage of.”
