FSU Advances To Super Regional With 19-3 Win Over UCF

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State (45-21) defeated UCF (47-18) by a final score of 19-3 in front of 4,074 fans at Dick Howser Stadium to win the NCAA Tallahassee Regional and advance to Super Regional competition next weekend. The Seminoles have advanced to the round of 16 in each of the six years since NCAA Super Regional play began in 1999. FSU shortstop Stephen Drew hit two home runs and Matt Sauls went a career-best 4-for-5 as the Seminoles totaled 22 hits in the game. Bryan Zech and Drew shared Tallahassee Regional MVP honors.

FSU freshman Brian Schultz (7-1) earned the win as he gave up just three runs on six hits in 7.0 innings pitched. Schultz struck out six UCF batters and walked one. Nine Florida State hits went for extra bases including five home runs.

The Seminoles struck early with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Stephen Drew homered in his second consecutive game, a solo shot to right, to make it 1-0. Aaron Cheesman started a two-out rally with a single and Ryne Malone was hit by a pitch before Matt Sauls picked up the RBI with a single up the middle.

Shane Robinson got the scoring going for FSU with a solo home run to left in the second inning. The homer was the the first of the year for the Seminole freshman. With Dennis Anderson on third after a single and a fielder’s choice, Eddy Martinez-Esteve’s sacrifice lead fly increased the lead to 4-0.

The Knights cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Drew Butera doubled, moved to third on a groundout and came around to score on a single by Matt Ray. After a walk to Dee Brown, Ryan Bono plated Ray with a single to right.

In the top of the fourth, the Seminoles sent 11 batters to the plate as they scored five runs. Bryan Zech started things off with a solo home run to left, his eighth of the year. Drew walked and Martinez-Esteve singled to left before Aaron Cheesman’s double knocked in the second run of the inning. Three consecutive RBI-singles by Malone, Robinson and Gibbs Chapman made it 9-2. With the bases loaded, Brown robbed Zech of a second homer when he pulled back a fly ball that would have cleared the wall in left for the the third out of the inning.

Drew launched his third home run of the day, Sauls had an RBI-double and Robinson knocked in two more with a single up the middle to highlight a four-run fifth that made it 13-2.

The scoring continued for FSU in the sixth when Martinez-Esteve had an RBI-double and Malone hit a three-run homer to right. Rhett James plated two more in the seventh with a double to right center.

Brett Bordwine (1-1) took the loss for the Golden Knights after allowing seven runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings of work. Bordwine had four strikeouts and two walks in the loss.

Florida State advances to play the winner of Arkansas and Wichita State next weekend. The host site will be announced tonight at 11:00 p.m on ESPN SportsCenter.
