Feb. 22, 2004

Tallahassee – The Florida State women’s tennis squad (6-3) lost a tightly contested match to the LSU Tigers (7-1), 4-3 on Sunday, February 22, 2004 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The Seminoles lost for the first time at home in the 2004 season and third straight loss overall.

FSU fought hard in the doubles area but dropped three close matches allowing LSU to take the doubles point. Junior Mihaela Moldovan (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and rookie Roxanne Clarke (Cape Town, South Africa/Clapham) lost to the Tigers’ tandem of Rocio Fantelli and Amanda Mang, 8-6 at the number one position. Newcomer Lindsay Deason (St.Petersburg, FL/Boca Raton Prep) and senior Anca Dumitrescu (Bucharest, Romania/VCU), playing out of the two spot against Jessica Ferguson and Marina Chiarelli, came back early in the match after being down 4-1. The pair could not take the lead, losing by a final tally of 8-4. LSU secured the doubles point with an 8-5 win at the number three position, pitting seniors Christina Denny (Canton, Ohio/Bradenton Academy) and Brooke Cordell (Soddy Daisy, TN/Tennessee) against Daysi Espinal and Lauren Seaman.

With the Seminoles needing four singles wins, Dumitrescu got the ball rolling at the number one spot. The senior leader wrapped up the first point in 45 minutes, besting Ferguson in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Denny, who was up 5-0 in the second set before giving up two quick points, put the second point on the board for the Seminoles, winning, 6-2, 6-2. Deason played Chiarelli at the number four position, losing 6-0, 6-3 while Clarke faced Caliari in a losing effort, 6-2, 6-2.

Florida State’s fate lay in the hands of the number two and six positions, both playing out simultaneously. Moldovan, the reigning NCAA South Region Rookie of the Year, defeated Mang 6-2, 7-6(7-4) at the number two position to give the Seminoles their third point. Junior Amberly Tantee (Dana Point, CA/Futures) came within two points of sending the match to a third set tiebreaker but an unforced error gave Seaman the singles point and LSU the win, five minutes prior to Moldovan’s win.
