FSU Faces Final ACC Road Tests at Clemson and UNC

April 3, 2014

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 38-ranked Florida State women’s tennis team (11-7, 4-4 ACC) will face two of the ACC’s best on the road the weekend as the Seminoles travel to play No. 15 Clemson (16-3, 8-0 ACC) on Fri., April 4 at 3:00 p.m. before heading to No. 6 North Carolina (19-3, 8-1 ACC) to play the Tar Heels on Sun., April 6 at 12:30 p.m.

“Another big ACC road trip for us with Clemson on Friday and UNC on Sunday,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “Both of them are top 15 in the country. We love these type of weekends. We get on the road and get to play against some of the best teams in the conference. I’m looking for us to have a breakout weekend at some point. We are going to have to have some big wins and we have another opportunity against a really good team in Clemson on Friday.”

The Seminoles come off of winning two straight matches at home on March 30 against Florida A&M and North Florida, each with an identical 4-0 score. Florida State dominated in match one against the intra-city rival Rattlers and made short work of the doubles point. Singles went quickly as Kerrie Cartwright, Daneika Borthwick and Kristina Schleich each won in straight sets and only surrendered two combined games on the three courts.

The North Florida match went much the same way with quick 8-5 and 8-2 doubles wins and straight set victories on courts one through three by Cartwright, Borthwick and Mia Vriens.

For the season, Cartwright leads the `Noles with a 20-9 singles record and also has a 5-1 mark on court number one. She and fellow junior Borthwick have each won seven of their last 10 singles matches and look to continue that trend this weekend.

Mia Vriens is 13-5 in singles with five wins each on courts three and four. Vriens has a 9-3 doubles mark this season as well, often pairing with freshman Daniela Schippers (6-2) or senior Kristina Schliech (2-1).

Florida State’s matches this weekend wrap up its road ACC schedule for 2013-14 before coming back to Tallahassee for four straight matches before the ACC Tournament begins in Cary, N.C. on April 24.
