Virginia Tech is off to a hot start this season, winning a series against ranked Miami and North Carolina teams to start the conference slate. Most recently, the Hokies split a pair of midweek games against VCU in Blacksburg.

The last time the Hokies and Seminoles met, in 2019, Florida State won 2-of-3 games, including the 2,000th win of former head coach Mike Martin’s career.

Last week against No. 16 Virginia, Florida State won the series with dominating starting pitching. Messick, Hubbart and Grady combined to strike out 26 batters in 21 innings pitched, with just two earned runs on the weekend. Messick was named the Atlantic Coast Conference pitcher of the week after throwing 8.0 innings and 11 strikeouts, both career-highs, in the Seminoles’ 2-0 win in the series opener.

Messick was also named the national pitcher of the week by the College Baseball Foundation.

Hubbart followed with 6.0 innings and six strikeouts in Saturday’s 9-4 win, while Grady was the hard-luck loser on Sunday with 7.0 innings and nine strikeouts. Grady and freshman reliever Wyatt Crowell combined to retire the final 19 batters of the game, but the Seminole offense could not find the clutch hit while looking for a series sweep.

With the USF game postponed last Tuesday due to COVID testing procedures, Florida State is in the midst of a 10-game stretch against Top 20 opponents. After returning from Virginia Tech, FSU will host No. 5 Florida on Tuesday, March 16 before heading to Coral Gables to face No. 8 Miami for three games.

Florida State leads the all-time series against Virginia Tech, 45-15.
