FSU Hits the Road to Conclude Regular Season

April 19, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No.32-ranked Florida State women’s tennis team travels to Virginia for a pair of ACC matches to close out the regular season. The 12-7(4-5 ACC) Seminoles will face No. 17 Virginia at 11 a.m. on Saturday before taking on No. 68 Virginia Tech on Sunday at 11 a.m.

“It’s our last weekend of regular season matches,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “The big thing now is that we continue to get better and have some momentum heading into the ACC Championships.”

For the first time this season, the Seminoles will face three ranked doubles pairs when they take the court against the Cavaliers. Erin Vierra and Maci Epstein are listed as the No.23 duo, while Li Xi and Stephanie Nauta are No.34. Hana Tomlijanovic and Julia Elbaba round out the rankings at No. 89.

Virginia (14-8, 7-2 ACC) fields two ranked singles players in Elbaba (No.12) and Natua (No.77). Florida State will counter with three ranked players. Sophomore Daneika Borthwick (No.57) along with seniors Francesca Segarelli (No.106) and Amy Sargeant (No. 110) all were included in the April 16 rankings.

Borthwick and Segarelli have been listed in every poll this spring, however Sargeant climbs back into the ranks after debuting the season at No. 100 back in January.
Sargeant leads the team with a 25-6 showing in singles this season. Alongside Mia Vriens, the pair is also on an eight-match winning streak in doubles.

“It’s going to be a good road trip,” Sargeant said. “It would be great before ACC’s to go in and get two good wins and make a statement.”

Virginia Tech (13-9, 2-7 ACC) does not field a ranked singles player or doubles pair.

The Seminoles are 21-4 in the all-times series against Virginia while holding a 14-1 advantage over Virginia Tech.

“Usually we start to turn it on right now,” Hyde said. “We’ve had a great week of practice and now we’ll get them ready for a very dangerous Virginia team on Saturday.”
