TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State’s men’s tennis team opened their
home season on Friday as hosts in the annual Seminole Fall Classic. Auburn,
Central Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida A & M, Middle Tennessee State,
and Valdosta State provided the rest of the competition. The tournament
promised to provide some experience for the young squad before Spring
Freshman Deni Franulovic led the way for the Seminoles as he
advanced to second day action in the tournament’s main draw, the Singles A
competition. Franulovic, who entered the tournament as the #2 seed,
defeated Johan Westin of UCF in the first round in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
His early tournament dominance continued in his second match when he beat
FAMU’s Juan Lalic in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Franulovic will face Auburn’s
Estevom Strecker in the third round on Saturday.
Other Seminole highlights included senior Michael Ingham who was
upset early in the tournament, but rebounded in the Singles A consolation
round to defeat Doug Deurient of FAU 6-2, 6-2. He will face Auburn’s Raitis
Tukan tomorrow in the third round. FSU freshman Joseph Bassett came back
from a 1-6 first set defeat to win the next two 7-5, 6-1. He will face
FAMU’s Kareem Bennett tomorrow in the third round of the Singles B
Competiton. FSU’s Elliot Elias will meet FAMU’s John Richards in the
Singles B Consolation competition.
In other singles news, FAMU’s Jerry Joseph advanced to the third
round of the Singles A Competition where he will face Marco Borges of VSU.
Fredrico Camacho of UCF will meet VSU’s Nicolai Sablowski in third round
action on Saturday. William Guerin of UCF will attempt to advance to the
quarterfinals when he faces fifth seed Mark Koudes of Auburn tomorrow.
Friday was not a good day for the tournament’s top seeded players
as four of eight did not advance to the third round. Top seed Oliver
Foreman of MTSU suffered a first round loss to FSU’s Jeff Scarella, but
came back to advance to the third round of the Singles A Consolation where
he will face Auburn’s Marcel Mizerski. Fourth seed Daniel Klementz of MTSU
will matchup with Auburn’s Julien Curatella while Andre Boz of Auburn will
take on VSU’s Rasmus Larsen in other third round Singles A Consolation
The Seminoles doubles tandems fared well on Friday, with two of the
four teams advancing to the third round on Saturday. FSU’s Chad Mooney and
Michael Ingham beat FAU’s Fabio Faerman and Ruben Cruz 8-3. They will face
MTSU’s Olle Nystrom and Oliver Foreman on Saturday. Seminoles Rodrigo Laub
and Deni Franulovic defeated UCF’s Johan Westin and Augusto Sanabrio 8-3
after a first round bye. They will take on FAU’s Ben Cooper and Doug
In other doubles’ action, FAU’s Juan Ros and Sandro Spotti defeated
Auburn’s Mark Kovac and Raitis Tukan to advance to the third round where
they will face UCF’s Fredrico Camacho and William Guerin. Auburn’s Estevom
Strecker and Andre Boz will meet MTSU’s Mehdi Belbacha and Michael
Chamberlain on Saturday.
The action begins on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at the Scott Speicher
Tennis Center. Admission is free.
