FSU Jumps To No. 1; Burroughs Earns ACC POW

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – For the first time in its storied history, the Florida State softball team is the No. 1 team in the country as the undefeated Seminoles earned 776 points and 18 first-place votes to earn the top spot on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll on Tuesday. The Noles become the 16th different school, and the first from the ACC, to be ranked No. 1 in the 23-year history of the NFCA poll.

FSU has opened 2017 with a 10-0 record that sits in a tie for fifth-longest winning streak to open the season, and the Noles lead the nation with a 0.22 ERA and also rank in the top 30 in six different offensive categories.

The highest previous ranking for FSU in the NFCA poll was No. 2, a spot that the Seminoles held for four consecutive weeks during the 2004 season that saw the Noles finish with a 62-12 record, an ACC Championship and an appearance at the Women’s College World Series.

Jessica Burroughs named ACC Pitcher of the Week
In addition to the team accolades received today, Jessica Burroughs secured an individual award as the redshirt senior was named the ACC Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday. It is the fifth time in her career that she has been honored as the conference’s top pitcher of the week.

Burroughs was dominant in the circle for Florida State in four appearances last week as the Noles continued their undefeated start to the season. The redshirt senior earned three wins – two versus Northwestern and one against Nebraska – after tossing 13.2 shutout innings, allowing just three hits with two walks and 23 strikeouts.

For the week, she faced just eight batters over the minimum, pitching to 49 different batters and creating 41 outs, as opponents batted just .067 against her over her four appearances.

Burroughs earned the win in relief against Northwestern on February 17, tossing 2.2 innings of no-hit softball as the Seminoles came from behind to beat the Wildcats. In her start against Northwestern on February 18, she recorded a strikeout against each of the first six batters she faced and finished with nine strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched, allowing just two batters to reach base.

Burroughs has not allowed a run in her last 20.1 innings in the circle, dating back to a solo home run by Furman in the fourth inning on February 11.

Florida State vs. South Alabama Postponed
Due to the threat of weather in the Tallahassee area later this afternoon and evening, the game between Florida State and South Alabama scheduled for February 21 at 6:00 p.m. will be not be played tonight. Both teams will look to see if the game can be rescheduled for a future date, and any information will be announced on Seminoles.com.

The next games for the No. 1 Seminoles will be later this week as FSU heads out to Cathedral City, Calif. for the 2017 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The Noles will play No. 18 Texas A&M (10-0) and Stanford (7-3) on February 23, San Diego State (3-4) on February 24, No. 9 Arizona (11-0) on February 25, and close out the weekend against No. 6 UCLA (10-1) and No. 14 Michigan (6-3) on February 26.
