Game Notes vs Minnesota

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Fifth-ranked Florida State (33-11) takes a break from conference play this weekend and wraps up its current eight-game home stand with a three-game series against Minnesota (22-16) beginning Friday, May 2 on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium.

Game times for this weekend’s series are set for 6 p.m. Friday, 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday with all three games airing on ESPN3.

Saturday is Military Day at the ballpark. One thousand FSU Baseball military shirts will be handed out at the gates starting at 4 p.m. Throughout the game, FSU Baseball will recognize military members in attendance. Sunday is Kids Club Day at the park where kids in attendance will have the chance to make posters in Haggard Plaza, play corn hole and after the game run the bases on the field.

The Seminoles own a non-conference record of 16-4 in 2014 as three of those games came against Miami during the third week of the season.

FSU and Minnesota are squaring off for the first time since playing a three-game series back in late February of 2006, as the Seminoles swept the series outscoring the Golden Gophers 25-10. Florida State has won 17 of the 18 games in the series all-time and is a perfect 12-0 at home against Minnesota. The lone win for the Gophers came in Minneapolis back on March 7, 2004 as Minnesota defeated FSU 6-1.

This weekend will feature two of the winningest active Division I coaches in the NCAA by victories in Florida State’s Mike Martin and Minnesota’s John Anderson. Martin sits second (1,803) with Anderson in 10th (1,146).

One of Martin’s historic victory milestones came against Minnesota as Florida State’s Hall of Fame coach earned career win No. 1,400 against the Golden Gophers on February 25, 2006 in a 12-2 FSU victory.

Martin and Anderson also serve as two of the five longest tenured coaches in Division I in terms of coaching at the same school. Martin is in his 35th season at Florida State and Anderson is in his 33rd year – marks that rank tied for third and fifth, respectively.

Florida State had the week off for exams and is coming into the series winners of three of its last five games. Minnesota had its mid-week game cancelled due to weather but enter this weekend on a three-game win streak after sweeping Penn State last weekend. The Golden Gophers currently sit tied for fifth in the Big Ten standings with a 9-9 league mark.
