The Florida State men’s tennis team hosted their first event of the fall season in the annual Seminole Fall Classic. The tournament is being held at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The Seminoles welcomed 12 teams from around the south region for some fall tournament action. Friday, Oct. 19 marked the completion of day one action. Play will continue on Saturday, Oct. 20 beginning at 9:00 a.m. and will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 21 with the final rounds of competition beginning at 9:00 a.m.
In Singles flight A action four Seminoles advanced to the third round of competition. Alex Herrera defeated Andres Rojas, 6-0, 6-3 and then defeated Georgia State’s Mima Lisac in three sets. Herrera will next face Georgia State’s Alabano Franco. Seminole senior Gustav Bucht defeated South Florida’s Eric Gilhorn in the first round and went on to defeat UCF’s Augusto Sanabria, 6-2, 6-2. In action on Saturday Bucht will face the No. 4 seed of the flight in Georgia State’s Matias Ormaza.
Senior Seminole Jeff Scarella took the win over Bethune-Cookman’s Nicolas Laveade in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 to advance to round two. There, Scarella fell to the No. 4 seed, Ormaza of Georgia State. Romain Jurd, the No. 3 seed of the tournament would defeat South Florida’s Jorge Escallon in round one and advanced to round three following his win against Florida’s Ross Greenstein. Jurd will go up against UCF’s Cablin Bradu on tomorrow. Seminole junior, Rodrigo Laub fell in round one action to North Florida’s David Olave. In A consolation action Laub would take the win over Jacksonville’s Ben Birkman. Laub is set to face Florida’s Williams in action on Saturday.
Seminole sophomore, Jarrod Owen and newcomer Brad Kolowich both saw action today in the B draw. Kolowich took a win over Wake Forests Dave Katz in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3. Kolowich fell in round two action to North Florida’s John Bougon. Jarrod Owen returned to action today for the first time of the fall season. Owen received a first round bye into round two. Owen then faced and defeated FAMU’s Peter Popisil, 6-4, 7-5. Owen will face UNF’s Matthew Anderson Saturday morning.
In doubles competition the Seminole tandem of Owen and Herrera advanced to round three action following a first round bye and a win over FAMU’s Popisil and Wadawu, 8-2. The tandem will face Sanabria and Bradu of UCF on Saturday. Following a first round Bye, FSU’s Bucht and Laub took the win over UCF’s Jaeger and Kanaan, 8-4. In round three action the Seminoles will face Valdosta State’s Kreutzfelot and Davies. The third Seminoles tandem in doubles action Laub and Scarella advanced to round two action after defeating Bethune-Cookman’s Krimer and Laveade, 8-4. In second round action the tandem fought for every point but fell to FAMU’s Yarrell and Murray, 9-7.
Action at the Seminole Fall Classic will continue throughout the weekend at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. Match action begins again tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m.
