TALLAHASSEE, FL.– After a cancellation due to rain yesterday, March 19th, the Seminoles were finally able to face Maryland for their fourth ACC match of the season. The Florida State men’s tennis team came away with the sweep, defeating the Maryland Terrapins 7-0, losing only one doubles match. The men’s tennis team now stands at 3-1 in ACC play, and improved the all-time series record against Maryland to 11-1.
Xavier Luscan and teammate Bartosz Koldej started things off for the Noles by defeating Jon Murchisan and Luan Nguyen at the No. 1 doubles position, 8-2. Alex Herrera and Jeff Scarella, playing at the No. 2 position for the Seminoles, defeated Jon Neeter and Larry Chou 8-1 to clinch the doubles point. The only loss of the day for the Seminoles came at the No. 3 doubles position where Maryland’s Chris Chiu and Dan Kenshalo took an 8-5 win over Jarrod Owen and Rodrigo Laub.
All six members of the FSU Tribe came away with wins in singles this afternoon. Luscan, who is currently in 99th place in the ITA ranking, defeated Chiu in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, and Jurd at No. 2 added another point for Florida State by defeating Neeter 6-4, 6-1. After dropping the first set, FSU’s Owen came back to get the 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Murchisan at No. 3, while Laub defeated Maryland’s Nguyen 6-1, 6-3.Herrera won the first set in a tie-breaker, and then went on to take the second set for the 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 5. Chad Mooney defeated the Terp’s Kenshalo in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 6 position to complete the sweep for the Noles.
The Seminoles will now prepare to host Clemson for their fifth ACC match of the season Friday, March 23rd at 5:00 p.m.
