FSU Set for Five-Match Home Stand

Nov. 16, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After a convincing 3-1 victory on Wednesday night in Miami, the 22nd-ranked Florida State indoor volleyball team (19-7, 12-3) returns to Tully Gym for a five-match home stand starting on Sunday against Notre Dame. The match will start at 12 p.m.

On Wednesday night, the Seminoles grabbed their first win in Coral Gables since 2010 and recorded the first 2-0 showing for the season against the Hurricanes since 2009.

“It was extremely important for us to go down to Miami and play well,” head coach Chris Poole said. “Any time that we’ve played poorly we’ve been able to bounce back and it was good to see us do that. We just have to find that consistency this year if we want to reach our fullest potential.”

In the win against Miami, a pair of Seminoles stood out by recording double-double figures, as junior setter Sarah Wickstrom notched her ninth of the season on 28 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Nicole Walch had her fifth as she led the attack with 16 kills and 12 digs.

Also in the duel, Florida State overcame adversity in the second set after handling the first for the 1-0 lead. Freshman Izzy Carmona’s kill at 16-21, sparked a 9-2 run in order to give the Seminoles the 2-0 lead heading into the break.

Heading into Sunday’s match, Poole takes with him a head coaching career record of 699-271 and will look for his 700th victory. Poole captured his 600th career victory during his second year at the helm of the Seminoles. That win came against Alabama A&M in the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

Notre Dame boasts an 11-15, 5-10 record, having recently fallen to Miami on Friday night, 3-0. FSU first faced the Irish in South Bend, Ind. on Oct.20, capturing a straight-sets 3-0 win.

“Now that we’re home for the next few weeks we’ve got to get into a groove,” Poole said. “We have three weeks where we can train and not worry about packing our bags and that’s going to help us.”
