FSU Set to Close Out 2013

Nov. 26, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After an upset win over (then No. 13) Duke on Sunday, the 16th-ranked Florida State indoor volleyball team will close out the 2013 regular season this week. The Seminoles (22-17, 15-3) will host Clemson (15-4, 9-9) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday before playing Georgia Tech (12-18, 6-12) at 4 p.m. on Friday.

The Seminoles have faced both Georgia Tech and Clemson on the road earlier this season, first falling to the Yellow Jackets (3-1) before coming back from two-sets down to defeat the Tigers in five sets (3-2).

“That was not a good weekend for us,” head coach Chris Poole said. “We didn’t play very well as a team but we continued to work hard. I feel like we’re making a lot of improvement right now. Our underclassmen are starting to step up and that’s going to be a key for us heading into the NCAA Tournament.”

Florida State snatched its fifth victory over a top 25 team of the year on Sunday when it defeated Duke in straight-sets. For her efforts of 15 kills while hitting .419 percent, Nicole Walch grabbed her second ACC Player of the Week award of the season.

Still sitting in second place in the conference with two matches left, the Seminoles will wait to see what the Blue Devils produce against NC State and No. 14 North Carolina as they still hold a game lead over FSU.

“If Duke were to lose to North Carolina or North Carolina State that would give us the chance to move back into a potential conference championship. We know we can’t control that right now, we’ve lost that deck of cards and we’re playing a different hand. Right now, we’re going to play the best we can.”

The Seminoles will find out their postseason fate on Sunday, Dec. 1 when the selection show airs on ESPNU at 9:30 p.m.

Prior to the start of the match against Clemson, the four members of the senior class will be recognized. Ashley Neff, Olivera Medic, Aurora Davis and Elise Walch will all take center court to be honored.
