TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 44 Florida State men’s tennis team (6-0) got to play their first match at the Indoor Tennis Facility today, January 22. Playing singles and then doubles, the Seminoles got a 7-0 win over Furman to close out the Seminole Quad 3-0. The Noles are off to their best start since 2008 when the team started 6-0. The team is now 50-1 in singles and doubles play this year.

“It’s a good start,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “I think a couple guys didn’t play great but they found ways to win. I think anytime you can do that it’s important for great players to find ways to win on days that aren’t their best days.”

In singles play sophomore Blake Davis got a quick 6-0, 6-3 win on court two over Joel Cook. On court five, senior Jason Zafiros followed suit and came off with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Tyler Droll. After winning a tight first set, junior Jordan Kelly-Houston closed out the second to get the 7-5, 6-0 win over Andrew Mellow on court one.

“A couple guys I thought played really good today was Blake, who really bounced back from yesterday, played outstanding, so did Jason,” continued Hultquist. “They got on it and played quickly. It’s also good for Jordan who won a lot of matches this week and has come a long way from where he was a year ago.”

“The team really worked hard this weekend,” said Kelly-Houston. “These matches are built to really give us confidence and that’s exactly what has come out of this weekend. We only lost one singles match but everyone’s feeling good about themselves. It’s been a whole team effort and everyone is feeling great.”

On court four, junior Andres Bucaro also won a close first set. He down 1-2 in the second set, he came back to win five straight games and win the match 7-5, 6-2 on court four over Robbie Aru. Freshman Benjamin Lock lost his first set but came back to win the match 6-7 (4), 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) against Ryan Miller on court six. On court three, freshman Cristian Gonzalez Mendez finished the sweep with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win over Jacob Behal.

In doubles play redshirt-sophomore Brian Alden and Zafiros teamed up on court three and came off with the 8-3 win over Watson George and Droll. Lock and Bucaro finished next with an 8-6 win over Cook and Nate Collins. Finishing the sweep was Kelly-Houston and Davis who won 8-5 over Mellow and Behal on court one.

Florida State travels to Rice next weekend for the first and second rounds of the ITA Indoors. They will face Rice on Saturday and then play either Baylor or New Mexico State on Sunday. Follow the team on twitter at twitter.com/fsu_mtennis.
