Atlanta, GA –
Junior slugger Brandi Stuart hit her fourth home run in six games at the Buzz Classic but it wasn’t enough as the 20th-ranked Seminole softball team committed six errors in a 4-2 loss to Troy State (28-8-0). Florida State (31-13-0) allowed four unearned runs on six errors and was eliminated in the quarterfinals at the tournament hosted by Georgia Tech.
Troy State took an early lead by capitalizing on three FSU errors and bursting out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning. The Seminoles hadn’t even got on base until the fourth when Tatiana George continued her hot streak from late Saturday night by singling to right field. The rally seemed to die when George was picked off on first on a great throw down by freshman catching sensation Tamra Howren. Kim Unkenholz (5-2) then retired Shundra Colzie to leave FSU with just one out left in the frame. The Tribe rallied though as Jessica van der Linden singled through the left side bringing up Brandi Stuart who already had three home runs at the Buzz Classic. The junior went to a 3-2 count before sending a line drive over the center field fence to bring FSU within a run at 3-2.
Troy State immediately answered the Florida State rally by getting a run back in the fourth as two more Seminole errors led to another Trojan run which was their fourth unearned run of the game. The Seminoles never threatened again as Unkenholz picked up the win and became the winningest pitcher in Troy State softball history. Van der Linden was the hard luck loser as she didn’t allow an earned run but saw her record fall to 10-4 on the season.
The Seminoles next travel across town to resume their four-game series against Florida A&M in a game scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start. The Tribe then returns home to complete their season series with the Rattlerettes in an August 6th doubleheader slated for a 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. start.
