May 15, 2002

The 21st-ranked Seminole softball team (49-17) opens NCAA Tournament play at 5:30 pm this evening versus the University of Auburn (38-25) in the Tallahassee Regional at the Seminole Softball Complex. This is the third straight season the Tribe has advanced to the NCAA postseason and the 15th time in program history. Florida State has advanced to the regional finals two years in a row and this is the second consecutive season the Garnet and Gold has hosted a NCAA Regional.

Last season, FSU posted a 4-2 record in the 2001 Tallahassee Regional and came within one strike of advancing to the school’s sixth Women’s College World Series (WCWS). The Seminoles had a 1-0 lead over Cal in the bottom of the 10th inning with two outs and two strikes before the Golden Bears knocked in two runs on a walk-off single.

“I think we learned a lot by hosting last season and advancing to the final game,” said senior Becky Brock. “We come into this year’s tournament with the knowledge that the harder we play and the more we bring into this weekend the better off we will be. We know this field and we’ve been to the finals two years in a row now so we are hungry to take that next step.”

The Tribe is coming off a disappointing showing in last weekend’s ACC Tournament as they failed to reach the championship game for the first time in 11 years of ACC play. The Seminoles will have the opportunity to make-up for last weekend starting today and might even get the chance to avenge a loss to eventual ACC Champion Georgia Tech who is also in this weekend’s Tallahassee Regional.

“Each year we strive to get better and that means making it to the World Series this season,” said sophomore Elisa Velasco. “What happened last weekend is going to help to bring out the best in everyone on this team in the NCAA’s.”

The Seminoles and Tigers met earlier this season at the 2002 Seminole Invitational Tournament. Auburn took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh before FSU put four runs on the board to win the game. This is Auburn’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament.

“We have been practicing really hard this week and I hope that everything will come together,” said freshman Bryttani Lindheim. “We’ve been really loose all week and we just want to go out there and have fun. We just need to get back to playing at the level we have been for most of the season.”
