Check out how FSU fared versus its regional field:
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The 21st-ranked Seminole softball team was selected to host its second consecutive NCAA Regional Tournament Sunday evening and will open tournament play with the University of Auburn Thursday, May 16 at 5:30 p.m. This is the second year in a row that the Seminoles (49-16-0) have hosted an NCAA Regional advancing to the championship game last season.
The third-seeded Tribe has already faced three of their regional opponents during the 2002 regular season and has a 4-3 record versus the group. The Seminoles went 1-2 versus No. 1 seed Florida Atlantic, 1-0 versus No. 4 seed Auburn and 2-1 versus No. 5 seed and ACC foe Georgia Tech.
“We are very excited we got in to the tournament and have an opportunity to host, ” said head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf. “Even though we stumbled in the conference tournament, I think our strength of schedule really helped us.”
This is the second consecutive year FSU has hosted a regional and it is the sixth time in school history that the NCAA has placed a regional in Tallahassee. Florida State has advanced to the College World Series on two occasions when they have hosted.
“Our facilities people do such a great job of hosting tournaments so it is great that they will once again get the chance to put on an NCAA Regional,” said Graf. “It is also great for our kids who know the field and can play in front of a home town crowd. We are really excited for this opportunity.”
The Seminoles open with an Auburn team that has ties to FSU. Head coach Tina Deese played at FSU in the school’s first year playing fastpitch in 1984. In her first season with the Seminoles, Deese led the nation in strike-outs average per game with 11.5 and as a result was named the Seminoles’ Most Valuable Player while helping lead the team to the Florida State Championship. She was also named to the All-Southeast Region First Team-a feat she duplicated her second season with the Seminoles.
In the only meeting between the team’s this year, a 5-4 win for Florida State, the Tribe scored four runs in the bottom half of the seventh highlighted by Shundra Colzie’s first-ever homerun as a Seminole and Elisa Velasco’s two-out game winning. Overall, Florida State leads the all-time series 5-1-1.
