FSU To Play Iowa State In 2002 Eddie Robinson Classic

Aug. 30, 2001

Winchester, VA –
The Eddie Robinson Foundation announced today that Florida State University will battle Iowa State University in the 2002 Eddie Robinson Football Classic at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

Named after the former Grambling State University Head Coach and the winningest coach in college football history, the 2002 Eddie Robinson Football Classic is scheduled for Saturday, August 24, with a 7:00 p.m. (CDT) kickoff. Fox Sports Net will televise the game nationally. Game time is subject to change.

The Florida State Seminoles, coming off a national championship game appearance last season and sporting a #5 preseason ranking in 2001, will take on the Iowa State Cyclones of the Big 12 Conference. The Cyclones went 9-3 last year, including a season-ending bowl victory over Pittsburgh.

This will be the second meeting ever between the two programs. In 1975, Iowa State defeated the Seminoles 10-6 in Tallahassee. “We are excited about playing in the Eddie Robinson Classic. We should have a lot of returning players in 2002 and I think that playing in a big-time environment to start your season helps keep everyone focused. The game will have even more meaning because of the connection with Coach Robinson and what he has meant to the game of college football,” said Florida State coach Bobby Bowden.

The Florida State-Iowa State game will be the fifth annual Eddie Robinson Football Classic. The inaugural event was played before a sellout crowd of 76,021 at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, NE. Nebraska defeated Louisiana Tech 56-27. In 1999, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 48-13 at sold-out (80,225) Notre Dame Stadium. Last year’s game was played in Kansas City, Missouri, with Kansas State beating the Iowa Hawkeyes 27-7 in front of 77,148 at Arrowhead Stadium. This year’s event was played on Saturday, August 25 at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin. Wisconsin defeated Virginia 26-17 with 76,740 fans in attendance.

“I think our appearance in this game underscores the widening scope of our football program nationally. It is the biggest of challenges for us as a team and as a coaching staff. Florida State’s record speaks for itself. I know that this will also serve as an opportunity for our fans to show the nation by their attendance in Kansas City what they showed everyone across the country last December in the Bowl – that Cyclone fans will follow and support us in big numbers”, said Iowa State coach Dan McCarney.

The Eddie Robinson Foundation will serve as the charity of the event and will receive a large portion of the funds. The Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by the Robinson Family in 1997 to serve as a catalyst for the fulfillment of the hopes and dreams of the youth of America. Through merit and need-based scholarships, grants, and charitable contributions, the Foundation will create better citizens for America by providing promising youth an opportunity to excel in the most competitive society in the world.
