TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – With a depleted lineup due to injuries, Florida State (9-6, 1-2 ACC) dropped its’ second ACC match of the season 3-0 to Duke (5-11, 1-3 ACC) by scores of 30-24, 27-30, 29-31 on Friday evening in front of a television audience. Kristen Rust had a .500 hitting percentage with 14 kills to lead the Seminoles offensively, while Cassie McLaughlin tacked on 13 kills.
The Seminoles and Blue Devils battled tight early as each team traded points to a 4-4 tie. Duke rallied to an 11-5 lead behind a 7-1 run approaching the halfway point of the opening game. The Blue Devils increased their lead to six only to see Florida State cut it to four at 15-19. FSU continued to fight back as the score was 22-24 in favor of Duke, the closest the Seminoles had been since the start of the match. Florida State got as close as one at 24-25, but the Blue Devils held onto the lead to win game one 30-24.
Game two started the same way as it was tied at five apiece in the early going. The Blue Devils scored three straight to break the tie at 8-5 and Florida State countered to tie the game again at 8-8. With Duke leading 12-9, the Seminoles tied the score at 14 behind a 5-2 spurt. The Blue Devils wouldn’t allow FSU to claim the lead as they maintained a one-point advantage at 20-19. Trailing 23-22, Florida State claimed its’ first lead of the game at 24-23, but Duke rallied to tie the game at 27 apiece on their way to a 30-27 game two victory.
Duke quickly jumped out to a 9-4 lead over the Seminoles in game three. Florida State would rally to take the lead at 17-16 with a 13-7 run. FSU could never turn the corner offensively in what turned out to be a close game. The Seminoles came back from a 24-28 deficit but fell in game three 29-31.
Florida State will host Wake Forest (12-3, 2-1 ACC) on Saturday, October 4 at 6:00 p.m. The Demon Deacons rallied from a two-game deficit to defeat Duke 2-3 earlier this week. The match will be televised live on Sunshine.
