⚾: FSU Welcomes Pitt, Bell to Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 25 Florida State (28-15, 14-10 ACC) went 4-1 last week and has won 8 of 10 entering this weekend’s series against Pitt (16-28, 4-17 ACC). The Seminoles have won three consecutive ACC series after taking the first two games against Wake Forest last weekend. FSU did not play any midweek games due to academic finals.

Game Notes

Pitt is led by head coach Mike Bell, a former Florida State player and assistant coach. In his first year at Pitt, Bell helped lead FSU to the College World Series as a pitcher in 1994 and 1995 and as a pitching coach in 2012 and 2017. He was in the FSU dugout from 2012-2018 before accepting the Pitt job this summer.

Bell is the first former FSU player under Mike Martin to face the legendary coach as a head coach.

Friday and Sunday’s games against Pitt will stream on the ACC Network Extra. Saturday’s game will be on RSN channels, with Wes Durham and Nick Green on the call.

In Tallahassee, the game can be heard on the radio on 106.1 FM. Nationally, the game can be found on the FSU Gameday App.

Florida State and Pitt have not played since 2016, when FSU won two of three in Pittsburgh. All-time, the Seminoles are 24-1 against the Panthers. FSU is looking to win its fourth straight ACC series, the longest streak of three-game ACC series victories since 2015.

Parrish is the reigning ACC Pitcher of the Week after throwing 7.0 shutout innings against Wake Forest last Friday. The southpaw added 10 strikeouts and has not allowed an earned run in 21.0 straight innings, the longest stretch of his career. Over his last three starts, all wins, Parrish has struck out 28 batters and allowed just 11 hits in 21 innings. The weekly ACC honor was the first of his career.

Head coach Mike Martin announced that FSU has added a game to the schedule against Jacksonville. The Seminoles and Dolphins will play a doubleheader in Tallahassee on May 7, beginning at 2 p.m., to make up a previously rained out game in Jacksonville in February.

FSU qualified for the 2019 ACC Baseball Championships in Durham, N.C., last weekend. The Seminoles have won the tournament in back-to-back seasons and 8 total times under Martin. The 12-team tournament begins May 21 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Centerfielder J.C. Flowers is on the midseason watch list for the John Olerud Two-Way Player Award and the Stopper of the Year. The Olerud Award honors college baseball’s best two-way players. Flowers is second among Seminoles with 9 home runs and leads the Atlantic Coast Conference with 10 saves. The Stopper of the Year is given to the best closer in the country.

After six weeks out of the polls, Florida State has climbed back in the rankings with a No. 23 position by D1Baseball and a No. 25 slot in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
