TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s basketball team kicks off the 2012-13 season with an exhibition contest against Shorter University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Admission is free and the Seminoles will hold a postgame autograph session.
Florida State returns eight letterwinners, including senior tri-captains Alexa Deluzio, Chasity Clayton and Morgan Toles in addition to preseason All-ACC selection Natasha Howard, a junior forward from Toledo, Ohio.
Toles is expected to start at point guard after playing in four games last season following a transfer from Auburn, while Deluzio, a sharpshooter who made an ACC-best 92 percent of her free throws in conference play, and Clayton will start on the wings. Anchoring the post positions will be Howard and senior Chelsea Davis. Senior Leonor Rodriguez made 26 starts last season and will again be counted on as a big-time contributor. Super-quick point guard Yashira “Cheetah” Delgado, the national junior college assists leader a year ago, will backup Toles and see significant minutes.
In an effort to get back to the NCAA tournament, head coach Sue Semrau has shaken up the squad and will build the team around its two biggest strengths – experience and versatility.
The only letterwinner gone is Cierra Bravard, an All-ACC center who graduated last spring. Bravard was a true post who worked best out of the half-court set. Her departure will enable the versatile and athletic Seminoles to get out on the break and run.
“We’re excited about the athleticism and the length that we will have on the defensive end of the floor to disrupt,” Semrau said. “I think that will translate into a very fast-paced style. We had a big loss in Cierra Bravard. At the same time, it gives us an opportunity to run more. It’s an exciting style of play. Our fans will really enjoy watching our team this year.”
Shorter is an NCAA Division II university located in Rome, Ga. The Lady Hawks went 28-7 a year ago and led the country in field goal percentage defense (.316).
Former Florida State graduate assistant Joanna Reitz is the assistant coach to head coach Vic Mitchell, who has guided Shorter to five consecutive winning seasons.
