TALLAHASSEE, FL.–Head coach Lise Gregory and the 43rd-ranked Florida State women’s tennis team ended the regular season on a high note today as they defeated Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Virginia, 4-3, in Charlotte, NC. The Seminoles have now won four straight matches, all on the road, and finish the regular season with a 13-9 record, 5-3 in the ACC.
For the fourth straight time the Seminoles managed to capture the doubles point, something that would prove crucial in the end. FSU’s Jessica Balbuena and Samantha Schoeffel defeated Christie Schweer and Henriette Williams, 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, and Alida Gallovits and Nanette Duxin won their match at No. 2 against UVA’s Amy O’Donnell and Christine Kim, 8-6 to clinch the point.
With the doubles point secured Florida State needed to win three out of six singles matches. The Seminoles added two quick points on the board after Alida Gallovits defeated Amy O’Donnell, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1, and Samantha Schoeffel at No. 2 took care of business against Henriette Williams, winning 6-2, 6-0.
The Cavaliers would close the gap with straight set victories at No. 3 and No. 4 singles but Florida State clinched the match as Marina Raic defeated Laura James by a score of 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5. Kelly Weaver would take UVA’s third point as she defeated Natalie Carratala’ 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 at No. 6, making the final score 4-3 in favor of Florida State.
The women will now return home to prepare for the ACC tournament, which will be held on April 19-22 at the Lake Cane Marsha Park and Tennis Center, part of Disney’s Wide World Of Sports Complex, in Orlando, Fla.
