Feb. 22, 2005

Tallahassee, Fla. – The No. 32 Florida State women’s tennis team rose in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) individual and team rankings, published Tuesday, February 22, 2005. The squad moved up two spots, from No. 34, after two tough contests against two top-15 team rankings (No. 2 Florida and No. 15 Tulane). Senior Mihaela Moldovan (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and junior Lindsay Deason (Fort Myers, Fla./Boca Raton Prep) jumped into #8 while Moldovan moved up 26 spots to #16.

Moldovan and Deason have a 4-1 record in dual match play this season, including upset victories over third-ranked Florida doubles duo of Whitney Benik and Lolita Frangulyan and twelfth-best paired group of Robin Stephenson and Ashley Bentley from Alabama.

Moldovan jumped from #42 in the nation to the 16th-best women’s tennis player in the nation after beating two higher-ranked opponents. The 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-American beat the #8 Robin Stephenson in two sets to help FSU upset the higher-ranked, No. 33 Alabama. Moldovan, a 2004 All-ACC first-team selection, took three sets from Florida’s #11 Jennifer Magley, to put the only point on the board for FSU in the match.
