KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – On the final day of competition, junior Mikey Lewark took second place on Platform with a score of 697.60 at the NCAA Zone B qualifier.
“It was a great day,” head diving coach Patrick Jeffrey said. “They came out strong after a flat day on 3-meter yesterday. We came back fighting and I’m proud of all three of them. We’re sad that it was Nick’s (Klein) last event, but we couldn’t be more proud of him. Mikey just had a fantastic day.”
After prelims, Lewark’s score of 358.95 carried over into finals where he outlasted a Miami diver for second place. Lewark edged into second place after first two dives in finals, scoring 60 points on the first before tallying 67.20 on the second. From there, he held on to second place.
Lewark’s second place lists him eighth on the priority list for the NCAA cutoff, just leaving him two spots shy of a bid.
“It’s a shame there aren’t more spots,” Jeffrey said. “There are divers that competed here all week that are deserving of going (to NCAA’s), but they can’t and Mikey is for sure one of those guys. We’re bummed but our guys gave it their best shot.”
Senior Nick Klein closed out his career as a Seminole with a sixth place finish. Klein capped off the best season of his career with a score 645.05. Junior Tom Neubacher finished right behind Klein in seventh with a total of 631.90.
The Seminoles qualified two divers for the NCAA Championships this week. Junior Kelsey Goodman will dive the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events at the women’s meet on March 21-23 while Neubacher will contest on all three boards at the men’s competition on March 28-30. Both meets will take place at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
