Bloomington, Ind.- Florida State junior Chris Cloer defeated two opponents on Monday to advance to the semifinals of the 2007 ITA Summer Circuit Championships.
Cloer (Brevard, NC) defeated Harvard’s Ashwin Kumar 6-4, 6-3 during Monday mornings fourth round and in an afternoon quarterfinal the Seminole standout dispatched of Michigan’s Michael DiPietro 6-3, 6-3.
“It’s a pretty big deal for me,” said Cloer. “There are a lot of good players here, and I feel pretty good that I’ve made it this far.”
Next up for Cloer is another opponent from Michigan, Michael Sroczynoski. The sophomore poses a major challenge for Cloer.
“He’s a giant. He’s 6’6″ with a big serve and big forehand,” said Cloer. “I’ll have to chop him down.”
Cloer’s run to the semifinals comes as no surprise. The junior has been red hot all summer winning the ITA Summer Circuit event in Tallahassee as well as the ITA Southeast Region Championships.
Cloer’s semifinal match against Sroczynoski will be played Tuesday morning with the winner playing in the championships Tuesday afternoon.
