Florida State center Nigel Dixon scored 20 points Wednesday, as he led the Garnet squad to a 71-68 win in the annual FSU Garnet and Gold basketball game. The 40-minute exhibition game helped coaches get an early look at the team that opens its season Nov. 17 at home against the Florida Gators.
“I liked what I saw in the guys today,” head coach Steve Robinson said. “We got a lot of things we got to continue to build, but I was very encouraged by their play, certainly by the effort >from start to finish.”
Sophomore forward Mike Matthews, who sat out the 1999 season due to NCAA academic regulations, was the high scorer for the Gold squad with 18 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds.
Wednesday’s exhibition game was the first action for seven newcomers to the FSU team. Shooting guard Adrian Crawford also returned after missing 11 games in junior season due to a chronic knee injury.
Senior point guard Delvon Arrington required three stitches above his right eyeafter he collided with a teammate while going for a loose ball in the first quarter. He returned to finish with six points and six assists.
Dixon, a 6-foot-10, 350-pound sophomore, dominated the post, connecting on 8 of 12 shooting in 23 minutes of playing time.
