TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Florida State Head Coach Leonard Hamilton was named the District 2 Coach of the Year and sophomore Devin Vassell was named to the District 2 First-Team as the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced their All-District Player and District Coach of the Year honors. Hamilton is now on the National Coach of the Year voting list.
Florida State, the 2020 ACC Champion, finished its season with a 26-5 overall record and a 16-4 record in winning the regular season ACC Championship. The Seminoles’ 26 wins mark a program record for regular season victories while their 16 conference wins are also a school record. Florida State tied for the ACC lead with four wins over nationally ranked teams (No. 6 Florida, No. 17 Tennessee, No. 7 Louisville and No. 11 Louisville).
The Seminoles are 55-13 overall (.809 winning percentage) and 29-9 in ACC play (.763 winning percentage) in the last two seasons – the best two-year totals for overall and ACC wins and winning percentages in school history.
Hamilton, who completed his 18th season at Florida State, was named the ACC Coach of the Year in 2020 for the third time in his career. He became the fifth all-time winningest coach in ACC history for overall wins (360) and ACC wins (170) during the 2019-20 season. Hamilton is the all-time winningest coach in Florida State history.
Florida State won the ACC regular season championship for the first time in school history as it defeated 14 of its 15 ACC opponents at least once during the regular season. The Seminoles finished the season as the only ACC team with an undefeated record at home (16-0) and as the highest ranked ACC team in the final AP Poll (No. 4 Florida State, No. 11 Duke, No. 14 Louisville and No. 16 Virginia). Florida State earned winning streaks of 10 (December 12 through January 25) and seven games (November 10 through November 30) and won 17 of their first 19 games of the season.
Vassell, who earned All-ACC Second-Team honors in 2020 as a sophomore, averaged a career-high 12.7 points and a career-high 5.1 rebounds while making a career-high 44 3-point field goals. He shot his career-highs from the field (.490) and from the free throw line (.738) while shooting .416 from the 3-point line.
Vassell was named as the Most Outstanding Player and the All-Tournament Team in leading the Seminoles to the championship of the Emerald Coast Classic with victories over No. 17 Tennessee and Purdue in the championship rounds of the tournament. He was also a finalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year and Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award.
Vassell was named to the 2020 All-ACC Academic Men’s Basketball Team after earning inclusion on the ACC Academic Honor Roll in 2019.
