Happy Birthday Morgane! Golf In First At Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. ( – The Florida State women’s golf team is in first place in the team standings, and senior Morgane Metraux is in fourth place in the individual standings after the first round of the Evans Derby Experience at the Auburn University Club. Each of the Seminoles’ five golfers finished the first round under par giving Florida State a 278 team score in the first round – tied for the sixth best single round team score in school history.

Playing in one of the toughest and deepest events in college golf this season, Florida State holds the team lead after 18 of 54 holes have been played. The Seminoles are 12 strokes ahead of No. 2 Alabama (sixth place), two strokes ahead of No. 3 Arkansas, seven strokes ahead of No. 5 Duke (tied for third), eight strokes ahead of No. 9 South Carolina (fifth place) and 16 strokes ahead of No. 12 Florida (seventh place). Maria Fassi of Arkansas, who totaled eight birdies and 18 holes played at par or better, is the individual leader with an 8-under par score 64.

“We put together a really good round of golf today,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “We played very consistent golf from start to finish, played more good holes than bad and took advantage of what the course gave us. This is a golf course that proves that if you have a plan and stick with it that you can have a good day.”

The story of the day for Florida State was how quickly the Seminoles took the team lead and how well they held their composure to keep the team lead over the course of 18 holes. The Seminoles combined for 28 birdies and only 10 holes scored above par during the entire round.

Florida State was led by Morgane Metraux (Lausanne, Switzerland) who carded a 4-under par score of 68. Her scorecard included five birdies and 17 holes scored at par or better for the senior. Metraux’s score of 68 is just two strokes off of her career-best score of 66 and is tied for the best first round score of her Florida State career. She is only four strokes behind the lead of Fassi of Arkansas.

Playing on her 21st birthday, Metraux was in command of her game from the start as she birdied her first hole of the day. She finished her first nine holes at 1-under par and closed her round at 4 under par over the course of her final 13 holes of the day. Metraux totaled four birdies on her final 13 holes to finish her round at 68.

Senior Kim Metraux (Lausanne, Switzerland) played her best round of the spring season as she carded a 3-under par scored of 69. She carded five birdies including two on her final four holes to put her in a tie for fifth place. She is only three strokes out of the individual lead.

Senior Kayla Jones (Milton, Ga.) carded a 2-under par score of 70 and is in a tie for ninth place in the individual standings. She has now carded six consecutive rounds at 75 or better and two of her last four at 70 or better.

Sophomore Amanda Doherty (Atlanta, Ga.) is in a tie for 13th place in the individual standings after carding a 1-under par score of 71. With five birdies in the first round, she carded 15 holes at par or better. Doherty was 2 under par over her last seven holes as she finished with a score of 71 or better for the seventh time in 17 rounds during her sophomore season. She has carded at least one round of 71 or better in five of the seven events she has played in this year.

Freshman Kathleen Sumner (Charleston, S.C.) is in a tie for 13th place in the individual standings as she finished with a 1-under par score of 71. She totaled four birdies and 15 holes at par or better; she was 3 under par on her first seven holes and was even par on her final six holes of the round.
