Holiday Training Trip

Jan. 6, 2011

After both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving squads posted huge meet victories over Florida in November, the teams spent their winter break with one another training and doing volunteer work in Naples. Both teams reconvened after Christmas in Tallahassee and headed by bus to Naples to focus on training as the ACC Championships are just over a month away.

The training trip was an opportunity for the staff and team to get away and focus solely on training and team bonding. The swimmers had two water workouts each day. There was a session in the late morning and then another in early evening.

In hopes of further strengthening team bonds outside off the pool, head coach Neil Harper separated the swimmers into four teams that competed daily prior to afternoon workouts. The teams squared off in volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, kickball and soccer. The groups also participated in skits that were shown each evening at 9:30 p.m. On New Year’s Eve the teams performed their skits during halftime of the Chick-fil-A Bowl and the squad also enjoyed watching the football team dispose of the South Carolina Gamecocks.

The trip wasn’t all about training and bonding. While in Naples, the Seminole men’s and women’s teams also donated their time in the community. Both programs participated in lending their help at the Fleischmann Afterschool Club or the Harbor Chase Assisted Living Facility. The Fleischmann Afterschool Club was developed as an afterschool stop for children of working parents and Harbor Chase is the home to older adults who would like to enjoy the company of others, or have special needs that give them the inability to live on their own.

The coaching staff is anxious to get their squads back in the pool this weekend after a productive training trip. Both teams have competitions against ACC opponents in Georgia Tech and Clemson the next two weekends. On January 22nd the teams will compete in their final dual meet against Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The Swimming & Diving seasons will conclude with the ACC Championships in February followed by NCAA’s in March
