Hule Advances to round of 16 at ITA Southeast Regionals

ATHENS, Ga. –The Florida State women’s tennis team began competition in the main draw of the ITA Southeast Regional on Friday with three doubles wins and four singles wins. Freshman Petra Hule won both of her matches to advance to the round of 16 and all three doubles teams advanced to the round of 16.

“We had a good day one at the main draw of our ITA Southeast Regional event,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “All spots in doubles played solid today. When we commit to being a more aggressive team, it is clear what we are capable of doing. We just to keep approaching every singles and doubles match with the mentality of being less passive and more aggressive.”

In singles play, Hule earned an upset in the first round as she defeated 15th seed Mariana Gould from Georgia, 6-3, 6-4. Hule kept it rolling in her second match of the day as she defeated Jessica Cortest of USF 6-3, 6-2 to make the singles round of 16. These two wins extended Hule’s win streak to four.

“It was really good to see us win three of our five ffirst-roundsingles matches,” said Hyde. Petra had a really solid day today. She knocked off a very seasoned player from the University of Georgia in the first round.  She came back in the second round and took complete control and command of the match against a pretty dangerous player from South Florida. She was very composed and very professional today and did a great job playing her game. I am really excited for her round of 16 match tomorrow.”

The Noles began the day with all three doubles teams on the court. The duo of Hule and sophomore Andrea Garcia got things started for the Garnet and Gold as they took down Danailova and Ramirez of North Florida. The Seminole duo took down the Ospreys 8-4.

Sophomore Gabby Goldin and freshman Lucie Prochazkova did the same as they rendered another UNF pair flightless after an 8-4 win.

Sophomore Nandini Das and junior Ariana Rahmanparast came into the regional as the two seed and took down Bordes and Granstrom of UCF in an 8-7(8) win.

In singles, Garcia fought in a three-set match against Rafaela Gomez of North Florida. Garcia took the first set 7-6(3). She then lost the second set 6-2 but was able to come back and take the third, 6-2. In her second-round match, Garcia took on 10th seed and No. 111 ranked Namil Otsuka of Georgia Tech. Garcia lost the first set 6-7(3), but turned things around in the second set, taking it 6-3. However, Garcia could not keep it rolling and lost set three 6-1.

Das brought home the third singles victory of the first round for the Noles defeating Lucia Montano of UNF in dominating fashion, 6-2, 6-0. In the round of 32, Das took on fourth seed and No. 49 ranked Paige Hourigan from Georgia Tech. Das fell to Hourigan 6-1, 6-1.
