Individual Leader Kinhult Tops Seminoles At Darius Rucker

Round 1 Team Leaderboard / Round 1 Individual Leaderboard / Round 2 Pairings

HILTON HEAD, S.C. (seminoles.com) – Florida State freshman Frida Kinhult is in first place in the individual standings, and the Seminole women’s golf team is in second place in the team standings after the first round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the Long Cove Club. Kinhult carded a 3-under par 68 and leads the 90-player field by one stroke while the Seminoles shot an even par 284 team round and trail South Carolina by only two strokes with two rounds and 36 holes of golf remaining to be played.

Kinhult was stellar throughout the round with a team-leading six birdies and 15 holes scored at par or better as she put herself in position to compete for her second collegiate championship. Kinhult holds a one stroke lead over four players including teammate Beatrice Wallin who carded a two-under par score of 69. Junior All-American Amanda Doherty is in a tie for 10th place in the individual standings as she carded an even par 71.

Florida State is the only team in the field with two players in the top five of the individual standings after the first round of play. The Seminoles, South Carolina and Wake Forest are the only teams with three players in the top-10 in the individual standings after the completion of the first 18 holes.

“I am happy with the way the team played today,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “They stayed patient not only on the greens but around the course as well. The wind picked up on the back nine but they stayed patient and took whatever the course threw at them. They have put themselves into good position for the weekend. We had three players play really well and it will take a team effort to get the job done this week. We are looking forward to a competitive weekend with some great teams.”

Kinhult was on fire from the start of her round as she birdied her first hole and earned five birdies on her first nine holes. She was three under par when she made her turn to the front after beginning her day on hole No. 9. Kinhult continued to play well with one birdie and seven more holes at par to finish with at 3 under par.

Kinhult has now carded eight of her first 15 collegiate scores in the 60’s with six of those scores coming at 68 or better. She is averaging 69.27 strokes in the first 15 rounds as a Seminole.

“I hit the ball great at the start of the round and managed to make a few birdies,” said Kinhult. The wind kicked up a little on my last nine and my irons were not as good. But I kept to my routine and finished a minus three. The good part of my round is my desire for the worst parts of my round today to be more stable tomorrow. We are really excited as a team for the next two days.”

Wallin was exceedingly consistent in carding her 69 with two birdies and 17 holes played at par. She carded pars on her first 17 holes and birdied her final two holes of the afternoon to finish at 2 under par.

Wallin’s 69 was just one stroke off of her career-best score of 68 which she carded it he first round of the Schooner Fall Classic. She has now carded three of her first 15 collegiate scores in the 60’s.

Doherty continued her stellar play as she carded an even par score of 71 to finish the first round in the top 10 of the individual standings. She finished second among her teammates with four birdies and was never above par during the round. With three birdies on her first six holes, she was as many as three strokes under par during the round.

Florida State begins the second round of play in the leaders group and are paired with South Carolina and Wake Forest. The Seminoles, Gamecocks and Demon Deacons begin play on hole No 1 beginning at 10:10 a.m.
