TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis team continued main draw play at the 2016 ITA Southeast Regional presented by Oracle at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on Sunday, as junior Guy Iradukunda advanced to the final of the singles draw.
Iradukunda defeated third-seeded Piotr Lomacki of Miami in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinal round.
In the semifinals, Iradukunda took on eight-seeded Walker Duncan of Georgia, one of three Bulldogs who advanced to the semifinal round. Iradukunda dispatched Duncan 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the final.
“I’m really proud of how Guy played today, he beat two really strong players,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said.”I think Guy’s had a great tournament- it shows what can happen when dig down and win a first round match point and come back to where he’s playing better each day.”
Iradukunda will take on top seed Wayne Montgomery of Georgia at 9:00 a.m. Monday with an automatic berth in the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on the line.
In the doubles draw, Iradukunda and sophomore Aziz Dougaz dropped a close match 8-7(5) to Justin Roberts/Peter Bertran of USF.
The winners of the doubles draw will also receive an automatic bid.
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, considered the second leg of the collegiate Grand Slam, will be held Nov. 3-6 in Flushing Meadows, NY.
